History Of The Chicken Wing

Back in the old days, people used to cook whole chicken for dinner, but then when family dynamics started to change, people looked around for more convenient options that were easier to prepare. The result was chicken wings were born!

The deep-fried chicken wing has long been a staple in the southern part of the United States. But since 1964 when the co-owner of Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, Teressa Bellissimo cooked leftover wings in hot sauce as an alternative, the popularity of the chicken wing exploded to all across North America.

Why Are Chicken Wings So Popular? 

Interestingly, timing played a part into wings’ popularity. During the 1980s, bars and pubs started to lower the price of wings because they were a cheap alternative to an entire chicken dinner and people started to eat them by the bucketful! Patrons also realized that the spiciness paired perfectly with beer. 

In addition, big screens were also becoming popular and people were watching their favourite sports out more frequently than at home. All of these aspects came together and became the now-classic pairing of wings, beer, and the big game!

Preparation 

Chicken wings are usually segmented into three parts: drumette, flat, and pointer. However, the last part of the wing is not eaten and usually discarded. At Gorge Pointe, we do wings a little differently from your average pub, resulting in a unique flavour profile you can’t get anywhere else! The wings are deep-fried, marinated in buttermilk, and dusted with Gorge Pointe signature breading and served with veggies and ranch or blue cheese dip. 

Drum or Flat? 

One of the biggest questions among chicken wing lovers is which part is better: the drumstick or the flat? This debate has been hotly discussed around the table for decades. In one corner, you have the drums which have way more meat. In the other, flats are packing less meat but more of the crispy skin and tasty sauce. Both are delicious and depending on what your tastebuds say, can satisfy your cravings.
